Now, before y’all go talking bout my imperfect skin, I am here to tell you that is the education I have, not what I put into place! (Yet)
I will fully admit that I don’t take care of my skin the way almost all Makeup Artists do, or the way most people in general do. I don’t drink nearly enough water, I don’t have the best diet, I don’t double cleanse to remove my makeup, (Double cleanse? Yes, we’ll get to that!), and I don’t wash my face daily. “If you don’t take care of your skin, how do you know the proper routine?“ you may ask. Well, here it is. I’ve done tons of research. And I mean TONS. The best and easiest explanation I found was from Huda Kattan herself. Founder of Huda Beauty, blogger, and makeup artist. One of my favorite idols who has taught me the need-to-know skincare routine that everyone needs! Karan revealed that she struggled with skincare for 15 years! She still does today but has found the perfect routine that works for all skin types that will give you the results you want!
Here it is ladies and gents: WATER. Yes, that good-good H2O. Your skin is in fact the biggest organ in your body. All of your organs need water to function properly, and that rule applies to your skin as well! That’s not the only thing, though. Sorry, we aren’t getting off that easy. If only, if only.
Here are the skincare steps, in order, that you should practice daily, to achieve flawless skin.
1. Cleanse
Find your favorite cleanser, deep cleansing, for sensitive skin, etc. and put that bitch to work daily!
2. Scrub (optional)
I use a fruit-based face scrub *not exfoliator* in my routine.
3. Tone
Tone? Yes, a toner. Something I just discovered within the last 6 months. No joke.
4. Essence
No, not essential oils. (But perhaps.) Essences (esscensi?) are the key to locking in the next steps!
5. Serum
I use two serums. A vitamin C serum and a pore minimizing serum. 6. Moisturize
My favorite step! Do I really need to explain? 7. Oil
You always want to apply your oils last. I find that if I apply oils before other products, I don’t get all of the nutrients my skin needs as it seems they don’t have a way to soak in. I use 100% Pure Jamaican castor oil. The brand is use is also B Corp certified! (Don’t know what is? Go to beeswrap.com and you’ll figure it out) 8. Eye Cream
Kylie Jenner told us to use eye cream daily so here we are!
9. Exfoliate (2-3 times a week only)
Exfoliating is my second favorite. As I am a huge fan of Dr. Pimple Popper and peeling sunburnt skin off (sorry not sorry), exfoliating is so satisfying for me to see and do.
I did mention a double cleanse routine as well, and boy oh boy, I certainly did not forget it.
Double cleansing is so important for those of us who are constantly putting things on our faces (I don’t judge).
Do you ever feel like your makeup removing wipe just isn’t making your skin feel clean? Well, that’s because it’s not! Makeup removing wipes will remove the product that’s on the top layer of your skin, but what about what’s underneath? What about what’s soaked into your pores? That’s where double cleansing comes in. Kattan suggests using a makeup removing balm to remove your makeup first! Yes, that cool Vaseline-looking stuff your Instagram idols use. This will get rid of all the makeup, including waterproof, from your face (and isn’t a wipe that’s just gonna get dumped in a landfill to not decompose for years) to get you prepped for the next step. A deep cleanser! A good deep cleanser will get down into the cracks and pores of uour skin to get all of the gunk out, and again, not something that will end up in a landfill! Afterwards, you can absolutely apply a serum or moisturizer to make your skin feel “closed for the day”.
Kattan shared in her story that many dermatologists don’t know about these important step-by-step products or the important of the order they’re done in! She has done many interviews and has spent literal years researching and studying skincare. Don’t believe me? Watch her video here: https://youtu.be/q0bQNdwvERo.
